The tour is accessible to travelers with physical-motor disability, preferable the presence of a companion as the territory has some challenging slopes or slight movement difficulties.

Day 1: Trieste - Cividale - Castello di Spessa - Grado

Meeting of the participants with the companion in Trieste and departure of GT bus. Arrival in Cividale and guided visit to discover “Ponte del Diavolo” and “Piazza Paolo Diacono”, the beautiful and evocative “Monastery of S. Maria in Valle” and the longobard “Tempietto”. The “Tempietto” is located, after walking through one of the oldest hamlets of the town, inside the Monastery. It is one of the most important and best preserved architectural evidence of the Lombard era, UNESCO World Heritage since June 2011. The “Ponte del Diavolo” is instead a symbol of the city of Cividale of Friuli. Built in stone from 1442 and divided in two arches, it rests on a natural boulder located in the bed of the river Natisone, along which you can admire a spectacular gorge. Transfer to “Castello di Spessa” and guided tour of the medieval cellars of aging. Following lunch in the castle rooms with tasting of 3 wines of the “Castello di Spessa” with a buffet of typical products and hot dish, coffee and dessert. Transfer to the hotel located in the center of Grado, accommodation in the rooms, fish based dinner in a typical “trattoria” and overnight stay.

Day 2: Grado - Riserva della Valle Cavanata - Aquileia

Breakfast and departure for the guided tour of the natural Reserve of Valle Cavanata. It has been a fishing valley for many decades, now abandoned and so it took the appearance of a typical lagoon area. The naturalistic management is turned mainly towards the safeguard of the present vegetal and animal  species with particular regard to the avifauna. Throughout the year you can observe 260 species of different birds that here find the perfect environment to build their nest. In the respect of the environment some short paths have been realized, passable with accompaniment (about 2 km long). Following transfer to Aquileia with lunch break in a typical “trattoria”. Later guided visit of what was one of the largest and richest cities of the Roman Empire in the Meditteranean. Among the treasures of Aquileia, the patriarchal Basilica dating back to the year 1000 that represents, with its beautiful mosaics of the 4th century, an unmatched example of religious architecture. The true jewel of the Basilica is the floor mosaic that covered the two large worship halls built in the early 4th century. The mosaic of the southern hall, which is the one that corresponds to the current basilica, with its 750 sqm it is the largest of the western Christian world. Founded by the Romans in 181 b.C. as a military outpost against the barbarians, Aquileia then became an important trading and fluvial center and one of the most thriving cities of the Empire. We will walk with the guide along the archeological path that leads to the Roman Forum, to the dig and to the river port.  At the end transfer to the hotel, free time, fish based dinner in a typical “trattoria” and overnight stay.

Day 3: Grado - Barbana - Trieste

Breakfast and stroll along the streets of the historical center of Grado with the companion. Later boarding to Barbana Island, located at the eastern end of the lagoon of Grado. It is permanently inhabited by a community of Benedictine monks, Barbano was an hermit of the 6th century that lived in the island and gathered around him a community of monks. A small wood extends on the western side of the island and covers more than half of its surface. The island is dominated by the church and its bell tower. The church is in neo-romantic style with a three-nave interior, hull ceiling and the high altar. Nearby, on the place where according to tradition appeared the image of Virgin Mary, there is the “Chapel of Apparizione”, built in 1854 to celebrate the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. The Sanctuary is also the destination of many pilgrimages coming from the Bassa Friulana area. You can also visit the Monastery shop that has handicrafts, such as the monastic beer made by the Benedectine monks of Norcia, homemade liqueurs and creams. At the end return by boat and a typical lunch with local cuisine with a view on the lagoon. Then free time for a walk along the promenade and return to the place of departure in the evening.
