Among the treasures of Aquileia, the patriarchal Basilica dating back to the year 1000 that represents, with its beautiful mosaics of the 4th century, an unmatched example of religious architecture. The true jewel of the Basilica is the floor mosaic that covered the two large worship halls built in the early 4th century. The mosaic of the southern hall, which is the one that corresponds to the current basilica, with its 750 sqm it is the largest of the western Christian world. Founded by the Romans in 181 b.C. as a military outpost against the barbarians, Aquileia then became an important trading and fluvial center and one of the most thriving cities of the Empire. A small wood extends on the western side of the island and covers more than half of its surface. The island is dominated by the church and its bell tower. The church is in neo-romantic style with a three-nave interior, hull ceiling and the high altar. Nearby, on the place where according to tradition appeared the image of Virgin Mary, there is the “Chapel of Apparizione”, built in 1854 to celebrate the dogma of the Immaculate Conception.
