The Barcolana, the largest regatta in the world

The Barcolana is the largest and most unique regatta in the world. Boats of different classes, of amateurs and professionals that challenge each other in a path that ends in the stretch of sea in front of the beautiful “Piazza Unità d’Italia”. The regatta takes place every year on the second Sunday of October and it reached its 53th edition. The city turns into a big party for everyone. Enogastronomic kiosks and musical and cultural events are programmed each year during the week preceding it. Pointless to say that this is an unmissable not only for passionate sailors but for whoever wants to have a pleasant week-end in one of the most eastern cities of Italy.

It is known that Trieste is a small city with a historical centre entirely walkable but it’s also true that a lot of its beauties are more easy to reach with a two-wheeled vehicle. For one day I decide to be a tourist in my city and to try the emotion of the bikesharing, I jump on my new adventurer and I head off to the promenade of Barcola. The path is well known but not for this reason less exciting and involves the crossing of a once unused really large urban area, but from some years in phase of requalification and valorization: the Port Franco Vecchio. Once crossed the entrance pass, the old hangars and port warehouses make a great view of themselves and witness this essential aspect of the city. Being careful of the rails that surface from the asphalt in some sections, I enter another space-time dimension where the time seems to be stopped. I go on and not long after see the Warehouse N.26 now seat of the Museum of the Sea that hosts the beautiful collection of the Boats of Llyod Triestino and further on the  Hydrodynamic Power Plant, both a must-see. Then I exit in Viale Miramare short before the Bovedo parking and I cover the last kilometer and arrive at BITS n.7 station of Barcola where, after dropping my e-bike, I go tasting my deserved reward at the “kiosk” of the pine forest and enjoying the sunset.

A wonderful day!

The Castle was designed in close harmony with the lush park that surrounds it. The garden, rich in valuable botanical species, is a refined blend of natural and man-made elements; along the paths, visitors encounter colorful flowerbeds, sculptures, monumental trees, fountains, and small ponds. The complex enjoys an enchanting panoramic position, perched directly above the sea on the tip of the Grignano promontory.
